“Awareness allows us get outside of our mind and observes it in action”
Last September 28, 2016, the Bureau of Fire Protection-Zambales together with the Philippine National Police and the C/MDRRMC, conducted the 3rd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill with the theme “ Duck, Cover, and Hold” to SM mall and different schools. This is for the purpose of testing and evaluating the preparedness plans and readiness of the participants in the event of a destructive or major earthquake. Like Ron Staley said, “I think drills are one of the most important parts of an earthquake plan. They allow you to see how well things operate and to correct any problems. When an earthquake happens it is too late to discover that parts of your plan may not work.”
This activity practice the students, teachers and employee do the duck, cover, and hold as one of the safety measures on how to protect themselves from falling objects or debris in case of earthquakes. Earthquakes may happen anywhere, so this is also conducted for the purpose of disseminating information to everyone and inculcate in the young minds of the students as well as the teachers that their safety is important. They may also be one of us to be of great help in terms of informing others in their community and apply what they have learned from us.
Earthquakes are rare challenge or event for schools. Unlike other natural or man-made hazards, they occur with no warning. Schools cannot be closed in advance, nor evacuated that is why this drill also aims to ensure the safety and awareness of the participants and give proper training on how to react appropriately during and after an earthquake.
