“Skill and confidence are an unconquered army.” – George Herbert

Every firefighter should perform his duties to the best of his knowledge and abilities in order to give his total devotion for public service. One should be physically, mentally, and skilled –prepared to provide his undying service for the community.

An essential part of the fire service is the sets of equipment. These are vital to each firefighter especially during disaster and rescue operations. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), ladders, fire bunker and trousers, etc. are just some of the equipment being used during operations. But what if a firefighter lacks knowledge in using these sets of equipment? Can he give his full potential to serve the public?

On 26-27 of December 2018, the Zambales BFP conducted SKILLS INVENTORY 2018 to the operation personnel of Zambales, to refresh and equip them knowledge and skills on using the equipment during operations. It was headed by the Zambales BFP Provincial Fire Marshal SUPT GENESIS F MORRONDOZ, and facilitated by the City Fire Marshal of Olongapo City Fire Station, CINSP AMANDO C ELEVADO Jr. During the first day, personnel from Cabangan, Botolan, Iba, Palauig, Masinloc,Candelaria, and Sta. Cruz were the participants of the training. And on the 2nd day, personnel from Olongapo, Subic, Castillejos, San Marcelino, San Antonio,San Narciso, and San Felipe participated in the training. CINSP ELEVADO was strict and precised during the lecture because for him, these skills should beinculcated in the hearts and minds of all BFP personnel. To uplift the morales of Zambales BFP, all personnel should be knowledgeable in using these sets of equipment.

The parts of the SCBA, fire trouser and fire bunker, were discussed. Even fire helmet was also one of the topics. Donning and doffing of these sets of equipment were all discussed. CINSPELEVADO evaluated the participants by giving them written exams (pre-test and post-test) and instructed them to perform the donning and doffing of the said equipment under time pressure. The parts of the ladder were also discussed and the proper carrying and using was also strictly performed in the supervision of CINSP ELEVADO.

It was indeed a fruitful activity to all the operation personnel of Zambales BFP. With the joint efforts of the Zambales BFP Provincial Office and Olongapo City FS, its aim is to impart knowledge and skills to all the Zambales BFP personnel. More projects and skill enhancement training are expected to be conducted within the province of Zambales because we live by the tag line, “Zambales BFP, Laging Handa! Kahit Saan, Kahit Kailan!”
